Julius Caesar was a benevolent dictator who had a lot of enemies. Popular as he was, his court envied him and wanted the power he wielded. Some even wanted him dead…and that included his two closest confidants, Brutus and Cassius.

When Caesar was assassinated, he was horrified to see who turned against him. Of all the people he imagined hurting him, Brutus was the last one he could have expected to deal the death blow. His last words allegedly were, “Et tu, Brute?”

The betrayal cut so deep, Caesar’s fate became the topic of plays and historical arguments. It even sparked a play from William Shakespeare himself. When Shakespeare writes about your betrayal, you know it’s bad.
