America had its fair share of betrayal over the years, including several political scandals that rocked the country’s reputation. Few ever had the kind of raw impact that Benedict Arnold’s betrayal had, though.
Initially, Arnold was a member of the Continental Army that fought against the British. A West Point graduate, Arnold’s slow switch to the Redcoat side culminated in him trying to hand over West Point to the British. When word got out, he became the first real example of treason in America.
