For the first six months of Benihana’s launch, Rocky slept on the floor of the restaurant due to the low profit margins. That all changed when the New York Herald Tribune decided to do a spotlight on his restaurant.

One glowing review highlighting the restaurant’s novelty later, people quickly started to line up to try Benihana’s cuisine. The hibachi showmanship was a winner that gave the restaurant enough money to expand and also gain a strong celebrity following.

By the 1970s, Benihana had a total of 20 restaurants. The number kept growing, and so did Aoki’s fame.
