Showcasing how harsh and wild the Vietnam war really was, Forrest serves his country in pride. It is never confirmed how much he truly understands the scenario he is put in but by golly he gets lucky while fighting in the war. Being shot in the butt might be painful but as you get to see glimpses and tender moments between Jenny and Forrest as they mature and grow up, it doesn’t matter if Jenny is a hippy and Forrest is a soldier, they will care for each other no matter what.
As Forrest goes off to fight in a war and Jenny goes off to protest that same war, she tells him to keep running away from trouble just like she did when they were children.
