The design of the crown awarded to Miss Universe underwent several major changes. Each crown design had its own name. The earliest crown was called the Romanov Imperial Nuptial Crown, and was originally owned by the Romanov czar family of Russia. It only lasted a year in action, and was quickly retired.

By the 1970s, the crown of choice was called “the Coventry Crown,” and it remained the longest-running crown in the pageant’s history. Winners of this era got a crown made entirely of rhinestones that had a woman holding a scepter as its centerpiece.
