In the pageant world, thin almost always seems to be in. Miss Universe might be one of the most striking examples of this. Though the average modern contestant’s Body Mass Index sits at 17.9 (underweight, by medical definition) today, it wasn’t much better in yesteryear.

A study revealed that contestants who won the title during the 1970s had a BMI that hovered around 18.5. This measurement is still healthy, albeit slightly slender. Perhaps the high standards of slenderness might be reason for us to protest the contest today.
