If there’s one type of music that’s totally tied to New Orleans’s culture, it’s jazz. And, that unique tie has a lot to do with a serial killer who was active in the area during the 1910s and 1920s. That killer was known as “the Axeman” because of the way he killed people using a hatchet.

Police never were able to gather enough evidence to convict anyone, or even get a lead on who the Axeman could be. The murders were starting to pick up pace, and New Orleans appeared to be at the mercy of the faceless killer.

Until one night, that is.

The Axeman wrote a note to the police that told them people who played jazz music loudly would be spared from the killings. So, to prevent more murder and mayhem from happening, New Orleans became a jazz town overnight. The Axeman never struck again, and to this day, no one knows who he was.
