The Miss Universe Pageant is considered to be one of the most competitive beauty pageants in history, and rightfully so. This pageant is regularly used in studies dealing with beauty standards, as well as studies showing how society evolved. It also happens to be one of the most expensive pageants in history.
When this pageant was in its early stages during the 50s, it was originally made to be a marketing ploy by the Pacific Knitting Mills company as revenge after Miss America refused to wear one of their swimsuits. It quickly became a stepping stone to Miss USA, and later on, became its own megabrand.
