The 1970s were a time when feminism was seeing a serious boom. Figures like Gloria Steinem were starting to voice the truth about society’s views on women and why women’s rights matter. One of the bigger targets of the 1970s was, unsurprisingly, beauty pageants.
Protests started to happen more after the mid-60s, and by this decade, it was a full-blown movement. Feminists found the objectifying manner of the pageants unacceptable, and called for a boycott. Since this decade, viewership of Miss Universe started to wane.
