Muhammad Bin Tughlaq
Called the “wise fool,” this Sultan of Delhi proved that being academically wise isn’t always the same as being street smart! While he excelled in mathematics, languages and astronomy, his poor judgment and lack of planning ultimately led to the collapse of his empire. He aimed to expand his territory and build a huge army – which is where everything started to fall apart.
The maintenance costs forced his subjects to pay more taxes – resulting in food scarcity and lack of valid currency. Meanwhile, his desire to rule the entire country led to the leader forcing all of his people to shift their homes towards Southern India – before realizing halfway through that this plan wouldn’t work and forcing them to return back. Not cool, and definitely poor planning on Bin Tughlaq’s part!
