In terms of recent history, there are few cases that are quite as chilling as this one. During the 1960s, the concept of being murdered on a college campus just wasn’t normal. So, one could imagine how shocked Penn State students were to hear that a 19-year-old college coed was killed in their library.

Betsy Aardsma was her name, and she was fairly popular with people on campus. And yet, someone had the desire to kill her. Why she died, no one knew, though there were some theories that suggest it may have been a crush gone horribly wrong.

The day of her murder, Aardsma met up with her two friends at the library for a study session. She then went to speak to someone, but realized she left her purse on the third floor. The last time people saw her, she was moving between books and two men were nearby, talking in hushed voices.

When people first found her lying on the floor, they had no idea that she was even injured because her body bled so little. When she was brought to the hospital, they found a single stab mark in her chest.

Police believe that a Ph.D student by the name of Rick Haefner may be to blame. The man was known for an explosive temper, sociopathic tendencies. However, evidence was circumstantial at best. To date, no one has ever been charged for her murder.
