Despite being estranged from his wife Gala in their last years of marriage, her death in 1982 drove him into a state of deep depression and paranoia. He scratched at his face and body, refused to eat and began abusing his caretakers. Palsy prevented him from painting – the thing he loved most – and he lived seven very unhappy years before his death in 1989.
