In 1975, a movie called Moonrunners was created and based on a modified 1958 Chrysler 300D used to deliver illegal goods aka moonshine. The car in this film was named Traveler, named after the horse the real General Lee used. When this moonshiner was chased by cops he would dump oil on the road to spook the cops and there you have the originator for the show.

Moonrunners was based on a real life man’s story, which in lieu was essentially the inspiration for The Dukes of Hazzard.
