While Benihana was launching itself to superstardom, Rocky Aoki decided to pursue a couple of other ventures–most notably, Genesis, a softcore porn magazine that had a surprisingly long run. 

The magazine was a success, but one of his other ventures wasn’t. Using his knowledge of hospitality, Aoki decided to create an upscale social club for the elites of the world. Like it’s magazine, it was called Genesis. 

The club only lasted a year. 

According to Aoki, Genesis was a flop and a learning experience. He explained that it taught him that “elites are the cheapest people.” As a result, the club was not really profitable enough to maintain.
