First discovered in Africa, the Lassa virus is transmitted through respiration near mouse droppings. It starts off with a high fever, then quickly turns into chest pain, encephalitis, facial swelling and deafness.
With a mortality rate of approximately 20 percent, it’s easy to see why people get nervous when they hear of a Lassa outbreak. Even if you survive, there’s no guarantee that you’ll ever have your hearing come back.
