MERS is a “cousin” of SARS. Known as Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome, MERS is a virus that still causes serious damage in communities throughout the Middle East. The disease causes people to erupt in cough fits and become short of breath.
The problem with MERS is that it often turns into a particularly virulent form of pneumonia. Around 30 to 40 percent of people who get infected with MERS die, making it a seriously lethal virus by anyone’s standards.
